Hang Up on Phone Scams
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and NorthCountry wants to help keep you and your data protected! As your community credit union, we take pride in keeping your private information safe and secure, and we want to give you the tools to do the same.
- Hang up if a call is suspicious. Some eyebrow raising behavior may include asking for personal account and security details, making threatening statements, creating a false urgency, and demanding payment. After you hang up, call the official phone number of your financial institution listed on the back of your credit or debit card, or find it on their official website.
- Do not give out personal information. Never share details such as social security numbers, account numbers (in part or in full), credit card or debit card numbers (in part or in full), PINs, usernames, or passwords.
- Avoid “too good to be true” offers . If a scammer promises you large sums of money, gift cards, or rewards, it’s probably an attempt to lure you into revealing the information they need to take control of your account.
- f you suspect you've just been scammed: (1) if you have access to digital banking, turn off your debit and credit cards; (2) contact us or leave a message; (3) monitor your account for missing or moving money.
If we detect suspicious activity, we will contact you. However, we will not ask for your account number, credit or debit card number, or social security number. When in doubt, never hesitate to hang up and call us back on the number you know and trust. We will never mind if you take extra precautions, and only a scammer will try and stop you from disconnecting.
Call us back at our official toll-free number (800) 660-3258 or stop by a branch. We'll be happy you took the steps necessary to avoid a scam and keep your money protected.
