Switching to NorthCountry

Our team is here to make moving your banking simple, smooth, and stress-free. Just follow the steps below and you’ll be settled in before you know it. The first step is to open an account with atleast $5.

 

1. Open your new NorthCountry checking account

You can open an account online or stop by any branch—we’re happy to help you choose the option that fits you best. Once your account is open, you’re ready to start the switch.

  1. Sign up for online banking on the NorthCountry website.
  2. Download the NorthCountry mobile banking app.
  3. Enter your username and password and click “Login.”


2. Update your direct deposit

Share your new account information with your employer or anyone else who deposits money into your account,  (We have a Direct Deposit Change Form to make this easy.)

If you receive social security, you can have it deposited into your NorthCountry account by notifying the Social Security Administration or calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). You will need our routing number and your NorthCountry account number, which are listed above.

Direct Deposit Checklist

Review previous statements to make sure nothing is forgotten, here are some common ones: 
  • Payroll direct deposits
  • Government deposits
  • Brokerage deposits
  • Transfers from other bank accounts
  • Child Support or court-issued deposits
  • Other deposits
  • Direct Deposit Change Request Form: Complete this form to update your direct deposit information.

3. Move your automatic payments and subscriptions

Connect any recurring payments—streaming services, utilities, memberships, or pre-authorized withdrawals—to use your new NorthCountry account.

Automatic Payment Checklist:

  • Gas
  • Electric
  • Water
  • Local/long distance telephone service
  • Cell phone service
  • Internet service
  • Cable or satellite TV
  • Other utility payments
  • Insurance
  • Transfers to other bank accounts
  • Child Support or court-issued payments
  • Mortgages
  • Auto loans
  • Other loans
  • Automatic Payment Change Requests
Review recent statements from your old account and note any recurring payments. Contact your billing agent to update any information on payments. You'll need your biller's name, account number, and the amount of the payment. Confirm your payments have been successfully switched to your NorthCountry account.

4. Update any linked transfers or investments

If you move money between accounts or have automatic transfers set up, be sure to switch those to your new account as well.

 

5. Close your old account

Once everything has successfully switched over (this usually takes about 4–6 weeks), After all transactions have cleared, and all automatied deposits and withdrawals have successfully transferred contact your previous financial institution to close your old account. 
 

6. Safely dispose of outdated items

Shred or destroy anything tied to your old account, including:
•    Debit cards
•    Checks
•    Old statements or payment forms

  • When doing taxes, remember to check where you have your refund deposited and change it to be your new NorthCountry account if it doesn't already link there. NorthCountry works with plaid and other account linking services. 
  • NorthCountry works with TurboTax and can link to your turbo tax account right from digital banking on our mobile app or on your desktop computer.
